Interestingly, movistar recently changed their keel bulb and mast, presumably to improve stability, trading a lighter mast for a heavier bulb to ensure the maximum righting moment. This design includes twin rudders as Kouyoumdjian is a firm believer in the better efficiency of the upright rudder on the leeward side when the boat is heeled and the added security of two rudders in case of breakage or collision with a floating object. Again, twin foils control leeway when the keel is canted. These foils draw heavily on the work done by skipper Mike Sanderson with the Open 60 Pindar, which used input from the Team New Zealand America’s Cup design office. Juan Kouyoumdjian has had the luxury of working in the only team that has two boats. Under the rules, if you have two boats in a team, both have to race, so cost is a major factor. But two boats allow you good working up time, boat against boat testing, and having one in the water early allows you time to assess the initial stab at the rule and then refine your later product. This Juan seems to have done with some subtle changes to the hull form in the fullness of the bow, perhaps in the positioning of the dagger boards and perhaps in the keel rocker, but his most obvious changes have been on deck.
