It was a blustery, sunny day on Table Bay and all seven VO70s lined up with reefs in the main and high hopes for some superb sailing.

The wind was 20 knots plus, the sun was out for the start of the In Port race. Brasil 1 took the start at the pin end and the breeze favoured them up the left side of the course, but the two ABN AMRO boats led the fleet around the first mark.

The strong breeze kept the crews busy from the first downwind leg and it wasn't long before the carnage began; ABN AMRO ONE struggled with a wrap in their spinnaker, movistar was completely knocked down in a gybe with her keel on the wrong side, Brasil 1 wiped out, Pirates broached several times while gybing, Ericsson had problems with their mainsail and as the wind gusts and sea state increased, so it went on throughout the race.

The course was shortened and ABN AMRO ONE finished almost seven minutes ahead of movistar. In the battle for third, ABN AMRO TWO held off Brasil 1 and the embattled Pirates whose gybing problems continued to the end. Ericsson hung on for fifth and ING Real Estate Brunel finished 25 minutes behind the leader.
