Volvo IT has been appointed as the official IT supplier for the 2008-09 race.

It will be the second consecutive race that Volvo IT has linked up with the prestigious event having provided IT solutions in 2005-06.

Under the terms of the partnership, Volvo IT will be responsible for setting up and maintaining the PC environment for race officials and the world’s media at the 10 port stopovers and at Volvo Ocean Race headquarters in the UK. The official race website will also be hosted by Volvo IT.

Andrew Ferguson, Head of Technology and New Media, said that the role played by Volvo IT was pivotal to the race organisations’ efforts to communicate the event to the outside world. “The services and solutions Volvo IT provide are critical to enabling our travelling team of people who manage port stopover activities to access vital information on the move. They also facilitate the needs of our teams at race headquarters who oversee operations and output vital data while the fleet is at sea.

“They also provide the ‘power supply’ for this site – www.VolvoOceanRace.org – which enables millions of race followers to stay close to the action.”

Christer Brasta, manager for Marketing and Corporate Communications at Volvo IT, said the company was delighted to be partnering the Volvo Ocean Race once again. "We are very pleased to have been given renewed trust to contribute to the Volvo Ocean Race," he said.

"The race in 2005-06 was a success for Volvo IT – the race organisation was very pleased with our performance which generated a great deal of interest in the race, both within Volvo and outside.

"We have learnt a lot when it comes to ready access to vital information in such a challenging environment as the Volvo Ocean Race and we shall naturally be using this experience in our planning for the 2008-2009 race.”
