ATTRACTIONS

If the boats are delayed in very light winds, take the time to have a look at the sights in Gothenburg. There are obvious things like the Liseberg Park, Sweden’s biggest amusement park and home to the biggest wooden Roller Coaster. As well as the rides, there are plenty of other amusements, and even a flea market. Take a trip up the Liseberg tower to get a panoramic view of the park and, more to the point, of the city.

CULTURE

Amused out? Nip down to the waterfront to the Maritime museum and have a look at the history of shipping and fishing in the town. You can also get above ground here by going up the sailor’s tower which strictly speaking should be the Sailor’s Wife’s tower because she is the statue on top. For culture vultures, try the new Gothenburg Opera House and if you are kid, get mummy and daddy to take you to the Universeum which is a whizzy, hands on place where the grown-ups think they’ve been clever so that you learn from doing things, but we know that we are just having a great time without caring at all about what they are trying to teach us!

RACE VILLAGE

Finally, if you don’t fancy any of that, call in at the Race Village to catch up with what’s going on and how long it will be before the first boat comes in, or just head off to one of the myriad pubs, bars and cafes that dot the city like spots on a Dalmatian. But don’t forget to come back to the Race Village on Saturday to be there when the Volvo Ocean Race finishes at about 1300. Stay for the fun and games that will go on well into the night; a night that stays remarkably light throughout; this is the land of the midnight sun after all!
