What is it?
The Volvo Ocean Race is the ultimate mix of world class sporting competition and on-the-edge adventure, a unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance. (Watch video)
It takes over nine months, covers over 37,000 nautical miles of the globe's most treacherous seas raced over 10 legs. The 2008-09 race will visit 11 ports around the world and incorporate seven inshore races, and seven 'pro-am' races.
The teams comprise professional sportsmen and women at the top of their game. The race requires their utmost skill, physical endurance and competitive spirit as they race from continent to continent in an easterly direction around the world.
The Volvo Ocean Race 2005-06 was the most successful round the world race to date, firmly establishing the event as one of the world's premier sporting events.
In 2008-09, it will build on its 33-year foundation by creating the platform to find the most consummate, all-round racing team the world has ever seen.
For the first time in the event's history, the race will visit ports along a new route that will include south-east Asia, India and China.
Building on the enormous success of the in-port racing in 2005-06, the in-port racing in 2008-09 will again bring the spectacular performance of the Volvo Open 70 to the ports and with points counting towards 20% of the overall result, will be great for the public, sponsors and media alike.
The new ultra high-tech Volvo Open 70 set new benchmarks and redefined elite ocean racing high-performance racing. Modifications to the Volvo Open 70 rule will refine the boat to ensure it is as quick and dynamic as any boat previously sailed in the race.
Established in 1973 as The Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race is undeniably the world's premier global yacht race and the most challenging sporting event in the world. It is the ultimate in human endeavour. It is life at the extreme.
